Hi,

Would be grateful for any tax help over this query if possible.

If someone left a job mid May last year how would the tax code work for 2023-24?

    Hi,

In what way?  A tax code is just a way to try and ensure the correct tax is deducted during the year.
But for countless reasons this isn't always possible so tax refunds (or underpayments) can occur.
Once the tax year has finished your tax code is immaterial really, HMRC will review the year as a whole and make any refund due (or notify you of any extra tax payable).
Assuming you don't need to complete a Self Assessment return.

Thanks. If this is sorted this month, would the new tax year likely start as the 'normal' tax code?

Possibly but a lot depends on what source of income you have.

For example State Pension would be factored in as tax code deduction so the chances of having a 1257L code are extremely slim.

    What exactly has happened?

Sorry it was for a separate question -

    Tax year 2018-2019
    Taxable income £20114.57
    Tax paid £1491.00
    National Insurance paid £1454.40

    Does this sound correct?

On a tax code of 1257L tax should be £1507.

Perhaps you claim a uniform allowance or suchlike and your code is higher?

I'm so sorry Angelcrackers, your query is similar to mine and I thought I was responding to questions about my question and now realise I've put them on your post in error.
