Pay As You Go Mobiles From £8.99, in-store & online

Options
What's the deal?

High street discounter TJ Hughes is offering a couple of PAYG phones for under £10, and web retailer Play.com's got one too.

They're all locked to Orange, so you can take advantage of its 2for1 cinema offer too.

Where From?
  • Motorola F3 on Orange £8.99 delivered. This superslim handset available from Play.com only has a black and white display, but makes up for it with an exceptional battery life. It's a simple handset without many features, but looks rather smart for the cash. As mentioned below, this is also available for £15 at Tesco, locked to its own network, yet buy there and it comes with a free £10 top-up voucher, effectively making it a fiver if you use the credit.
  • Sagem MY150 on Orange £9 in-store. High st discounter TJ Hughes has this Alcatel model in-store for 1 penny more than the motorola. It also has a black & white screen and sparse features, but is dressed in a smart chrome and black case.
  • Alcatel E205 on Orange £9.99 in-store. This one's also available from TJ Hughes. The extra 99p gets you a colour screen, polyphonic ringtones and a couple of built-in games. If you're looking for you local TJ Hughes Store, use its Store Finder.
Seen a cheaper PAYG handset? Post below and I'll add it in

Anything else I should know?

All of these phones are limited to two per customer.

All of Orange's Pay As You Go rates can be found on its website.

It may be possible to unlock these handsets for use with other networks. Read the Mobile Unlocking article for more info. If you're looking for a better contract deal, read Cheapest Mobiles.

Asda had cheap Nokias for 10 quid each today - max 2 per customer, on Orange. really basic phones, didn't really take too much notice cos DD went to look, and turned around about 2 seconds later saying 'well they're no good - theres not a camera on it!'.

Carphone Warehouse still has prepay Nokia 2310s piled high in the entrances to its stores, and the handset has been reduced to £9.95 with Virgin Mobile.

    It is £8.95 now!!!
    Cant be unlocked with code?
  • Better deal at Tesco if you want a simple, easy to use phone. They are doing the Motorola F3 (simple to use, very light and slim) for £14.97. This comes with £1.00 airtime credit and a free £10.00 top up voucher so effectively you are getting the phone for £3.97. Use your Clubcard to buy the phone, and you can also use your Clubcard when you redeem the "free" top up voucher.:j
  • Asda are giving a nokia away free if you buy 20 pounds of air time. It is a basic tarriff 10p for the first 3 mins going down to 5p and the same for texts. You get the 20pounds back over 6 weeks at a fiver a time. It is perfect for someone like me as I am agorophobic and just need something simple in case of panic attacks when I am out.Steph

Better still port a number and get another £5.

  • As well as all the great ideas about the Tesco offer on the Motorola F3, you might like to buy via the Quidco site. Register with the site, then go to Tesco.co.uk from the link and complete your purchase. (I think you can arrange local pick up rather than pay for postage). What will you get in return? - £6 into your Quidco earnings!! If you add up all the potential savings and 'cash backs' I think you might just be getting paid for buying this phone!

  • I bought an unblocked Motorola phone from Carphone Warehouse in Tottenham Court Road, London, for £8.95, on December 19th. I had to buy £10 credit, and the phone was on the Orange network.
I have since also used it on Vodafone Pay as you go.
