Hi. My golf club have imposed a bar levy of £100 on top of my annual golf club subscriptions. This is on the basis of use it or loose it!!
Is this legal to do this as I will be paying for something that I might not use?

I pay for libraries and social care as part of my council tax, I use neither (yet). Same applies really.
Dont like it, find another golf club.0 -
It's very common, so likely to be legal.0

It's the sort of change that would be covered under the club rules that allow it to change membership fees. If you don't like it I would discuss it with a committee member to see if you can understand the rationale for it. The alternative seems to be to put the fees up by the amount that £100 spent at the bar would increase profits (which might only be £50). This might be preferable to you, and possibly the majority of members. It may also be something that the club is prepared to allow a choice on.
There is benefit to a bar levy rather than increasing membership fees in that it encourages the social side of golf. I would not dismiss this benefit as over time it can be very beneficial to your mental and physical health. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
My club does it, so I am guessing it is perfectly legal. For my club, the bar struggles to make ends meet and usually is subsidised by the membership fees and other income. The levy at least ensures it meets a certain level of income.
Ours is £100pa, but I easily spend more than that in a year in the club. After all, it is only £2 a week!
Kind Regards,

Hang on so is this £100 essentially credit to spend behind the bar, is that how it works?
Whats the issue then? Its about 20 pints. In a year. Thats less than half a pint a week.
I dont know anyone who uses a golf club and never uses the bar.0 -
