Child maintenance payments

Can anyone tell me the following I have an arrangement where I pay my partner an amount approved by CSA based on my salary, I’m unsure how they can work out my payments based on my salary before tax it’s just ridiculous. My other question is my eldest son is leaving school A levels this year. He is planning a gap year before going university. Do I still pay for him during this year or does payments finish when he leaves sixth form? I would gladly support him directly but not give it to the ex partner if possible?

When your son finishes full time non advanced education then you will no longer need to pay child maintenance.1
