You need to provide figures rather than hours for anyone to be able to help.0

he comes out with 550 after tax on first job and 320 on second does that help0

Not really as I don't know how much tax has been paid and what the tax codes are. Nor does it tell me how if he's paid monthly, weekly or fortnightly.
Normally for 2 jobs, the first job would have the code of 522L ( normal personal allowance) which gives the tax-free allowances. 2nd job would, most likely, have BR as the tax code and therefore it's all subject to Basic Rate tax of 22%.
Now this works fine provided the 1st job earns enough to use up all the tax-free allowances and the 10% starting rate - £7455 per annum. If it's less than that it's possible to be paying too much tax on the 2nd job but you can apply for a rebate at the end of the tax year or have the tax codes adjusted.
You would need to supply the groass figures, how much tax is paid and what the tax codes are to be more precise.0 -
best thing to do is wait untill April, get both P60's and send them to the tax office and they will work out how much tax is owed or is to be refunded.
I had for part time jobs, working a cpl of hours each week. The main job, or the job which he had first will have the normal tax code and the second will have the basic rate (22% i think). With the old tax system of the 10% band, basically, add up the total wages from the two jobs. If the total amount is less that £5220 then he will get all the tax back that he has paid. If the total amount is less than £7455 but greater than £5220 then subtract the tax free allowance and calculate 10% on the remaining, .g if you earn £7400, of this £5220 is free so you should pay 10% of £2180 which is £218. The same applies to amount earn above £7455 where you work out 22% of the difference, then just add up the total amount of tax.
My guess he might of paid too much but the most easy way of sorting it out is to send the P60 to the tax office and thy will work it out for free and also show you what the tax is for each bandin the form a review page0
