Road safety statistics suggest it's down the the weight of the car, rather than the age.
As new cars are generally heavier than older ones the statistics are gerrting skewed.
A 20 year old Beemer, well maintained, will be safer than a modern day Smart car.

I have bought both new and secondhand cars over the years but all my new cars have been kept for several years and my current car, bought from new is now eight years old. There's always a lot of depreciation on new cars which seems a waste of money and a reasonable compromise is to talk to a car dealer and buy a demonstration model with very low mileage on the clock. If you buy a secondhand car, put some money away every month in your car repair/replacement fund so that when it has run its course, financing a replacement is not an overwhelming cost.0
