High Hedges

When we bought our home years back we approached our future neighbors about the hedges on their property.  They kindly sent a detailed hedge trimming plan, with photos, and more or less stuck to it until the older neighbor died.  We have a copy of the plan and an email giving me permission to cut a portion of the hedge.  His partner remains in the house, though he does not own it, and he now refuses to cut the hedges.  And he threatened have our house burned down when I trimmed according to our written permission.  What are my options?
