Hi there...wonder if anyone has any advice? 7 years ago, ready to pay off my horrendous debts, I became a live in carer earning £720 a week. Grabbed the bull by the horns and paid off 3 credit cards, closer to paying off the £14300 loan with Lloyds Bank- another £2000 and I'm done .All this as well as paying my sister's rent monthly. 'Home and dry' you might think? I was receiving an apparent debt from a debt collection agency called opos last August ( they never said how much the debt was and for whom I owed money to,but said they have a great deal where can offer a huge discount! All these came as messages on my handset. Sounds like a scam right? So I kept deleting the text. Then I received emails and now they've sent me a letter stating who I owe the money to. So they then sent me a reply and said in that order for them to investigate they'd need my full name, birth date etc. The letter said my debt was for £7300 to the Halifax but they'd accept £1800 one off payment! Just when I thought I was out of the woods along this comes. I joined up with Equifax and my credit score is 63% 'good'.Went through it with a tooth comb but nothing on this debt .I left the Halifax,I thought, with a clean slate. 15 years ago! The only thing that's holding the excellent credit rating from Equifax back is the £2000 left owing, which of course is ongoing until August. Any advice would be greatly and warmly appreciated.

Its quite likely to be statute barred, hence the wonderful settlement offer.

A debt that goes unpaid or acknowledged in writing for any period of 6 years from the date it defaulted will be statute barred under section 5, limitation act 1980.

    Do you remember the debt?

Can you remember when it defaulted?

What details does the letter from Opus contain? does it give dates of default/last payment etc?
