Thanks for your input it's indeed complicated.

In particular on this point though, this is exactly what I have done, and my estimate was significantly higher than theirs.  After digging into it it appears to be mainly caused by the exact point discussed in this thread i.e. they have effectively used one less year of statutory revaluations than I believed they should have done, and this happens to be a year which has a pretty large additional increase.

If I wanted to pursue this further, do you know who I would complain to eventualy if a complaint to the trustees didn't work - would the pension ombudsman look into whether their method of revaluation is reasonable and compliant?

I suspect in the end I will just have to live with it but in some ways I have nothing to lose by making complaints unless it actually costs me money to do so.

I'm going to defer advice on complaints to other forumites, I'm afraid - it's a) not something I know all that much about and b) potentially getting into ropey territory on professional grounds, as there could be potential conflicts of interest (real or perceived) from getting involved with complaints against either my firm or a competitor.
