With that income, especially up north, you should be able to afford a decent detached house.  Spend less on cars more on where you live, and find a more interesting job.

To flip the question around, why would I swap a position of almost being able to quit work (maybe not quite yet) to one of being in debt to the bank, in order to have more space that I dont need?

About 10 years ago, I was stuck with a mortgage, in a job I hated, and couldnt just quit then and there because Id be out on the street. I promised myself id never again be in that position

Your numbers look good to me, and personally I would quit as soon as possible.  I am pretty frugal though, so I wouldn't struggle on the same money.

If you are at all unsure though, could you find an IT job where you work from home most of the time?  Even if it meant a cut in pay, or was part time etc.

Not sure if you mentioned it in your original post or not, but have you checked your entitlement to the state pension?

Also, I am with you, no need to move house unless you really want to.  Being debt free gives you a lot of options.
