Thanks Xylophone, My NHS pension record shows I was paying contributions for all those years. I was thinking if the NHS pensions agency can give me a statement showing this, I can send this to HMRC as proof I was employed. I think this might be the easiest way of getting proof after so long a time.

Can you download or screenshot anything in respect of your NHS pension record, which might be the quickest way to get the necessary info? Otherwise your payslip from that time, showing category D NI, puts it beyond doubt that you were employed and paying (reduced rate) NI.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

    Hi Marcon
Thanks, that is a good idea…they are planning to make the nhs pension record viewable to members soon I believe but it’s not yet available unfortunately. I will see if they can send me my record in the post. I only kept the one payslip so I am thinking HMRC could query if I was really employed the whole time, unless I send them the pension record too. I will keep you posted and thanks again for your help!
