Child Benefit help please

Options
My partner has received a tax statement suggesting a child benefit charge £3374 for 23-24 tax year!!, we do not exceed £60,000 per year (his wage went up to £59 in August 2023) and we only receive c£1900 amount in child benefit how can this be right?

We are now stressed out and can't speak to them until Monday.

If this is for 23-24 then they won;t be doing the full calculations for some months. Did you stop claiming CB?

I always claimed CB and then had to pay it back but never paid back more than we got - have you put the figures into the calculator? https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-tax-calculator

    What exactly have you recieved?

Is it a coding notice?  Can you share the figures on it?

My guess would be that, rather than that figure being the amount they expect you to pay, it is rather a figure to adjust his tax code by.

40% of £3374 is £1349.60 - if the tax code of a higher rate tax payer is decreased by 3374 then you will end up paying £1349.60 more in tax, which is less than the child benefit you are collecting.
