Morning Everyone
A really silly question and please excuse my lack of knowledge but....
I am making shortbread for the first time today and the recipe says to use butter..... should this be salted or unsalted???
Thankyou all

Good question as the recipe that I used yesterday (my Gran's) didn't say - neither did it say how thick to roll them or how long to leave them in the oven!.
Anyway I used slightly salted and still put in a tiny tiny pinch of salt - they turned out fab!

I think the purists would say "unsalted". I always use salted though as I prefer the taste.
I'm sure either will give you delicious results.Work is not my Hobby0 -
i made camarmel squares a few days ago and my shortbread was unsalted and it was soooo yummy but i swear it's what causes heart attacks lolDEC GC £463.67/£450

Unsalted is usually recommended as you can then control how much salt is added yourself. But I just use whatever I happen to have on hand (usually slightly salted if using real butter) and no-one has complained yet!0

I use unsalted and don;t add further salt
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add this to the existing thread to keep ideas together.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
well I went for the slightly salted option in the end!!
One other question is.... it says on the receipe that you can put everything in a bowl and mix up in a food processor..... I dont have a food processor but do have an electric hand whisk... is that the same??? Or should I do it all by hand??
Thanks again everyone :T0 -
Not sure about a whisk - that's more for egg type mixes probably - does it have a beating attachment?
I don't have a food processor - just use a stand alone mixer with the "K beater".Work is not my Hobby0 -

Thats lovely thanks but in the end I just did it by hand, only took a couple of minutes........... and they are a success!!! :j0 -
Just made some shortbread (for the first time).
I think I should have used a larger dish to bake it in, I reckon it was too thick, the middle is soggy.
If I put it back in on a low heat, would it do any good??0
