Spendthrift Anonymous

Options
People tell me the first step is to admit you have a problem!
So here I am at a virtual 'Spendthrift Anonymous' meeting, I've just stood up and I'd like to say my name is ****** and I am a spendthrift and this has led to mounting credit card & personal loan debts.
So as of today I have changed my bank account, cancelled my personal loan direct debits, I'm not making any payments to my Credit Cards and the wait begins for default status.
I know I've just jumped on a roller coaster of indefinite length but fingers crossed it'll eventually finish at destination Debt Free.
So to keep me focused on the journey, you are going to hear the ups and downs, how many phone calls, emails and letters and maybe it will inspire someone else to stand up and take the first step

Very best wishes, you’ve taken the first step in your debt-free journey.
  • So 1 week into my journey and nothing has really happened yet, although payments and direct debits are not due until next week. I did take advice that I had read on the forums and fired up an old handset with a £5 top up and changed all my creditors details to this new number hopefully reducing the number of calls on my usual number. I cancelled the direct debits for the personal loans and within a couple of days got texts from Novuna requesting a call because the DD had changed. That's it so far but realistically none of them know I've started this journey, the next couple of weeks may tell a different story!

Are you considering talking to Stepchange or similar? They’re very helpful.
  • I want to do it myself …. A. To be accountable for all actions taken & B. To hopefully learn a life lesson that if you get yourself into something then you have to get yourself out of it…. I feel if I have control I will finally realise how to budget correctly and remain out of debt in the future… Debt has been a bit of a yo-yo diet for me in the past because someone else had the control and I just paid them an amount each month and they sorted it.
  • Week 2 …. 1 phone call (unanswered) therefore 1 message left, 2 emails and 2 text messages… so no major issues yet … expecting lots more of the same and actual snail mail to start soon.
    Confidence still high
