Paying simple assessment - urgent question!

I'm helping my elderly dad pay his simple assessment bill. The letter from HMRC has a charge reference on it (beginning with X), but when we go through the HMRC app there is a payment reference which is different (this starts with his NI number).
Can anyone let us know which reference is the correct one to use when paying via online banking? Many thanks in advance!

It starts with an ‘X’ followed by 14 or 15 characters.0

Thanks, I'll use this one - I've found some other references to using the 'charge reference' beginning with 'X' too ... just a bit bizarre that the online tax account gives a different 'payment reference' starting with dad's NI number. I'm assuming both would probably work as linked to his account ... but obviously cautious about making an error.0
