HMRC Warning - don't assume they will tell you.

So I went into my government gateway account I preparation for a moneywise call in a few days time.  I noticed a message in my website "inbox" that's been there since September, telling me I owe HMRC £176 and I have until 30th Jan to pay it.

Super fortunate I spotted this, as I have had nothing in the post and no other form of comms on this.

Is this the standard way in which HMRC now operate?  I haven't opted out of anything and if so, it's outrageous.  There could be millions of people about to get fined and charged interest on payments they don't know they need to make.

Mine was for a benefit in kind of a cycle to work scheme from 2020...

Watch out.....

AIUI HMRC only impose fines or interest on those people within Self Assessment.

And if it was Self Assessment you would have known about it by virtue of completing the tax return in the first place.

But I would have thought you would have received either an email alert or paper copy of the tax calculation.

Untrue..  Not on self assessment, and absolutely had a bill waiting in the HMRC messages folder on the government gateway that needed paying before the end of the month, with no other communication received.

  • They send an email to tell you there is a message. Maybe it got moved to junk or you didn’t notice. I recently got one.

DH's experience also - but I don't think it went to junk, although that's definitely worth checking.

I often check email on my phone, but any messages with attachments / needing to go to a website I leave until I'm on my laptop. I am aware I miss some stuff this way ...

No. Their standard procedure is to send an email alerting you to the fact you have a message. Have you checked the email address you have registered with them?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I always get emails when a new message arrives, I guess either you missed it in junk, they have the wrong email address or there was a delivery issue.

Currently being bombarded with emails and SMS from HMRC reminding me to pay my tax by the 31st.
  • When I owed HMRC unpaid tax for last year I received an email and a letter a few days later. Never look at the gateway account... maybe I should.
