It will depend on the council. How far back are you trying to go?If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Probably around 10 yrs.
Don’t know if they are similar to banks etc who hold records for min 70 -
Some councils appear not keep CT records for that long, sometimes only 6 or 7 years. Is your council a recently reconstituted unitary authority or still the same as it was 10 years ago.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

No it’s the same one , Glasgow, but trying to get an answer from them is practically impossible.0

What exactly are you trying to find out?If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

I need it for proof of residency as banks etc don’t go back that far0

Don’t know how long they keep records for, but have submitted a freedom of information to council to see it they have anything on me / property0

Can you access old electoral rolls? If you are renting, your rental agreement, or if an owner the solicitor's letter confirming your purchase. I doubt an FOI will give you much as the only thing the council is likely have, will be your CT account. One further thought, having a CT account in your name for a property doesn't actually prove you were resident, as some landlords pay the CT bill rather than the tenant. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Hi, is there anyway to find out the price of a flat in 1991?
It seems a council tax band was given to most properties without checking their value in 1991.
I live in a 2 bedroom flat in Hackney downs neighbourhood and my band is C however I believe it should be B as my neighbours flat just opposite to mine on the same landing was £33000 when sold in 1996 and again in 1997.
It seems impossible to find the value of any flat in 1991 so unless I can prove it I can not ask for change of my council tax band.
Shouldn't the Valuation office agency also prove the cost of a flat in 1991 before allocating a council tax band?
Thanks0 -

The original CT bandings were mostly carried out by contractors (usually local estate agents) with VOA staff doing a minority of the bandings. If a property's band was appealed and went to a Valuation Tribunal hearing, then that was the only time the VOA were required to use sales evidence to prove the band.
£33,000 for a 2 bed flat in London in 1996/7 seems suspiciously low, were these definitely open market sales. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
