I can't see that electric cars will gain widespread acceptance until the price of charging them away from home falls.  You have to put up with the inconvenience of waiting much longer to refuel your electric car so the compensation should be that it is cheaper.  A good electric car might take you 4 miles per kWh.  A reasonable petrol car might get 50 miles to the gallon.  So if petrol is £1.40 per litre 100 miles would cost you £12.63.  Or at 60p per kWh 100 miles would cost you £15.  More expensive, so what's the point?
I literally never wait to refuel. My car refuels while I sleep or, very occasionally, while I shop or eat. Also those rapid charging prices are only a tiny proportion of my charging; such that I still have over £40 credit on my Electroverse account from referrals and the sign up bonus from last Spring.
  • I have an EV, I got one at the end of September, I have only ever charged it at home and I do want to save the planet.  But the way to do that is to have everybody else wanting an electric car too and I don't see how that can happen whilst charging anywhere but at home is so expensive.

Whilst charging away from home remains expensive,  there's an incentive for everyone wanting an EV to make some arrangements to avoid that.  I appreciate that for some it might be extremely difficult but there are probably many who wouldn't even bother to try if there wasn't a saving to be made.  The more people that rely on public charging,  the harder it becomes to find a vacant charging point.

It isn't strictly necessary to have your own private off-road parking area.  It might be possible to make an arrangement to share somebody else's or perhaps arrange permission to have a cable route from home to the road.

  • But the problem is that "everyone wanting an EV" may remain a small percentage of the population whilst charging away home remains expensive.  I bought an EV because I rarely travel more than 150 miles in a day and the nominal range of my car is 200 miles.  But when we do travel further we will use my wife's petrol-engine car and whist range anxiety and expensive away-from-home charging remain we won't be swapping that for an EV.

There seems to be a widespread acknowledgement that we need more charging points if EV uptake is to increase and complete silence about the need to make these charging points less expensive.

Just an update OVO Charge allows you to filter by price.

You can get £8 of charging credit too if you sign up through a referral, the app has tasks as well which you collect stars for and then you can earn more credit, so it's pretty decent
