Awaiting a Decision

Hi everybody

So, after 22 years at the same company I've made the huge decision to start interviewing for a new job. I have recently just had 2 interviews for what I think is the perfect position. Salary...location...feel of the business....everything seems right. First interview was the Tuesday before Christmas ( 19th December ) Face to face sit down interview for around an hour, went great and everything positive. I was invited back for a second interview that afternoon via phone call. This was a factory tour arranged for Tuesday 2nd January. Again, everything went great. I was there for 3.5 hours which included the factory tour then face to face sit down at the end. After discussing salary, notice period etc. I was told they would be in touch by the end of the week. I followed up on the Thursday with an email thanking everybody for their time. Its now a week after the 2nd interview / factory tour but I've heard nothing. No decision....no update....not even a reply to my follow up email. I'm new to all this so don't know if this is a normal situation or whether its slightly unprofessional on the hiring company's part. Any advice or re-assurances will be much appreciated.

It's a bit unprofessional on their part to promise a response by the end of the week and then go silent, but could be explained by the hiring manager being off sick for example. Give them a couple more days grace and then a polite follow-up email. If nothing by early next week a phone call would be in order, assuming you have a contact number. If they continue to ghost you then there's not much you can do really, except maybe be glad you dodged a bullet as somewhere that goes silent may harbour other toxic working practices!

Absolutely par for the course, I'm afraid - but don't assume the worst just because they haven't rushed to do things on your preferred timescale, even if they said they would!
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

There are many reasons why this might have happened, some of which are not sinister at all. Having hired people myself I know it often takes longer than the hiring manager expects.

If you want to contact them again I would wait until at least the end of this week, maybe into next week. You want to seem keen, but not annoyingly pushy.

You might decide that this isn't the right company for you, based on how long they take to reply. I wouldn't let a 1 week delay give you a negative impression of the company though (due to how commonplace this is).

It's annoying but I'd say sit on it too, if you pester you'll communicate the wrong message and sometimes hiring doesn't go to plan, or business requirements/budgets change and they might be coming up with a contingency.

If it makes you feel better, I applied to a train operating company in early 2023 (april i think) as I was going through a hard time with my current employer. I was asked just after the new year to schedule an interview.

I'd agree with this, especially as a lot of employers would have been closed until last week, and catching up can take time - I think this is also a season when a lot of long-running bugs are going around because we were all so busy keeping ourselves to ourselves!

  • I am guessing with them saying they will contact you on the 2nd January, I guess a few of the workforce may still be in holiday mode because of Christmas.  Either way, I hope you get a response soon to put your mind at ease!  There is nothing worse than the waiting game!
