Hello All,
I have for over 15 years been PAYEE with my employer deducting tax.
I am still an employee but someone wanted me to do a job and contacted me 17th April 2023. However the payment for the job was made to me on 10th September 2023. Job was only £5k.
i understand I need to complete a self assessment. So today got my UTR online.
however I am now confused which date is the date for filing and should it be paid before Jan 2024 or Jan 2025.
Will they send me a tax request or I need to fill online?
thank you All

Hi,the tax year runs from 6th April to 5th April.Your payment date, 10th September 2023 falls into the 23/24 tax year, so you will report by January 2025.

You can file any time after 6th April 2024, once you have all the required figures and no later than 31st January 2025.
If you elect to pay any tax owed as a balancing payment to HMRC that will also be due by 31st January 2025.
Depending on your other income you may be able to pay through your tax code or if you are a high earner then a payment on account may be needed.
The HMRC site has pretty good information.
You may get an email shortly after 6th April this year asking you to complete a return but if you don't the onus is on you to file.
Filing online is easy if you have all the figures to hand.1 -
Wow thank you both for the brilliant advice, most grateful2
