Item Not As Described ...

So I'd been looking on ebay for some desktop lamps, and saw some very nice tiffany style animal lamps - there were quite a few sellers with the same range, same pictures, and mostly all were Chinese sellers. They were pretty cheap and only about 8" high, and my mum liked the look of one too, so i ordered a pair i saw from a seller in the UK. The items turned up quickly enough but after opening one it was pretty obvious they were certainly something less than the advertised picture (see below). I've opened a return and sent them back as not suitable, which means I had to pay the return postage, but I wonder if I should rasied it as a SNAD and sent back at their expense. None of the pics in the listing look anything like the one I got. There was also a disclaimer on the listing which said "Due to different lighting and screen settings, the product color may be slightly different from the picture", but I think that doesnt justify the variation in reality!

Chinese sellers should immediately raise a red flag. Like buying in the street markets in the old days. Here today gone tomorrow, with your money.
  • Forget the colour disclaimer - they are totally different and easy to see that

For future reference if they're selling the same thing and presumably using all the same pictures and info as the Chinese sellers, being registered as in UK unfortunately means nothing.

Yeah, I did wonder tho how it worked, because when i did the return thru ebay and got the label printed off, it was to a personal address; not long after i'd done this, the seller contacted me and actually asked me to send it to a diff address than the label had - some kind of forwarding place in London. I contacted ebay to ask what i should do, they said i could send it to either, so i left as is as i'd already printed off the label. So I assume the personal address on the label is someone acting like somekind of UK based distribution centre, with probably a household full of goods from the seller, and when the seller sells one, the person in the UK is notified and sends it out, hence the quick despatch time ...

Should have been a SNAD claim, so postage would have been covered by the seller.
Also you did right by not posting to an alternative address. Only use the address provided by eBay. If not, the seller can later just claim they didnt receive the item back, and your tracking would show delivery to a completely different address!

Well, now it gets interesting ...

I despatched the item to the address on the pre-printed label from the ebay return process as I said, it was RM48, happened to check the tracking just now and this is what it states:

    Jan 05, 08:43 AM
    Incorrectly addressed. Returned to sender.
    Jan 05, 08:43 AM
RTS - ADDRESS INCOMPLETE OR NOT FOUND
    Jan 04, 04:53 PM
    Item Received
    Jan 04, 04:53 PM
    ITEM SCAN
    Jan 03, 05:00 PM
    Accepted at Post Office.

So its on its way back to me! Whats the betting its a fake address?

Phone ebay and stay on the phone until you get someone that understands that you have been given a fake address.

It was a while ago, but I've had this happen to me and once ebay understood what I was telling them they refunded me and charged the seller anyway. I then just emailed the seller, said I had their item and if they wanted it then I would need a pre paid tracked label and I would get it into the post . Neither of he 2 sellers I can recall doing this ever sent a label, so I just held the item and a year or so later- or when I found the item lurking in a cupboard, I just sent it to a charity shop.

Well, I was gonna do as you suggest, but I'd already sent ebay a further email about the tracking now showing it was being "returned to sender", they've now sent a reply email closing the case in my favour, and that my refund would be credited within 24-48 hrs! But the seller has also emailed me again with the following:

hello, could you please give us your paypal account ? then we will refund you.
paypal account is like the mail box, which will take 3%-4% commission( That is paypal account platform charging not us ).
    waiting for your reply, thanks!

I'm not sure i need to do anything more, apart to decide what to do when I actually get the item back. What a palava!

Dont trust the email. Go into purchase history, look at the case for the item, see if its been closed in your favour.
If it has just wait for the refund (which will be for the full amount, no commission!)
