    I had all sorts of plans. Then I got terminal cancer. The plans,worries ,and the rest of it mean ZERO. My wife will be ok,and that is good. However,the pounding,pounding questions about investment and *time* that one should retire is pointless. Just live. Take care.

    Sorry to read about the cancer part of that. My father dying in his early forties helped to shape my own views.

    Doesn't seem that you've discussed financial options here yet so a few highlights:

    1. You can take out the whole of a pot based pension tax free as a serious ill health lump sum at any age if your doctors have said your life expectancy is no more than a year.
    2. You can pay in up to the usual limits before or after 1.
    3. Some defined benefit pensions like final or average salary have poor death benefits. If that is the case then this is one of the cases where a transfer to a personal pension is easy.
