Was an accident 'settled'?

In a few weeks time my car insurance is up for renewal. I'm trying to get quotes for renewals and I've come across some terminology I don't understand. I'm using confused.com and one of their questions is "Have any drivers had any motor accidents or claims in the last 5 years?". Unfortunately, I have.

I caught the edge of an industrial vehicle, which took no damage. Nobody was harmed but we exchanged insurance details as a precaution. As the damage to my vehicle was minimal I didn't make a claim. I did let the insurance company know. They kept a note on file in case the other driver made a late claim, and after 6 months closed the file with no further action, and they've confirmed that as no claims were made it won't affect my no claims bonus.

The follow up question is "Was it settled?" and I can't answer this because I don't understand what it means. As there were never any claims made, I don't know what could have been settled. The site requires a Yes/No answer though and I'm concerned if I say 'yes' I'm suggesting there was some sort of claim to the insurance company which needed to be formally resolved, but if I say no does that imply that the accident was unresolved?

Your advice is welcome :)

In your situation, I’d probably do quotes with both yes and no, and then when redirected to the actual car insurance provider sites, review the answers and see what it has been mapped to on that site (they may use different wording or have helping notes), and change your answer necessary. From there, choose the best quote that works for you.

Not a good idea I believe - if you repeatedly ask for quotes givung different answers to the questions you may well find the insurers think you are trying to game the system and increase their quotes or dont quote at all.

ISTM More accurate is to say YES to the question and then say "no claim made" when more detail is asked..
  • Phone the insurance company, explain and ask them how to complete the question.  Keep a note of the conversation including who you spoke to, date and time.

Do you have specific knowledge that this happens, or are you just surmising this?

It is very easy to do two very similar quotes and determine what answers change the premiums, without giving away your specific personal details.
