My Intentional Journey to Debt Freedom

  • I feel exactly the same way @foxgloves.  As you say, hard to know at the outset.
I have such high annual mileage due to work that I was expecting a biggish increase. I had asked around my work colleagues in order to manage my expectations and my expectations were fully realised 😱.

I’m not going to rush - Mr L having a look around and we will discuss further at the weekend.  I’m not automatically someone who goes for the cheapest but I want to make sure all of it stacks up as much as I can as equally I don’t want to pay for a name if that’s the only reason for the higher cost.

I haven’t used anyone I’ve never heard of
    is the quote significantly cheaper?
Good insurance is worth every penny and unfortunately you don’t find out until something happens
it’s always worth ringing your current company and asking if they can match quotes

    Savings: £20,000

  • It’s half the price @MFWannabe.  I’ve been with DL for 7 years.  No accidents for 6 years but 30000 miles annually which whacks it up.   DL not interested in reducing but Mr L going to try now we have an actual quote.

The crux (mentally) is that I have actual experience of DL dealing with a claim (very good albeit 6 years ago) and that’s the only time it really matters isn’t it.  And I know that is influencing me.

Big sigh……oh well, we will dig into it a bit more at weekend.

Our car insurance rose by very little last year, but by £6 a month this year. I have stuck with the company this time, as on the couple of occasions I have had to phone them about something, I got through quickly & the advisors were very helpful. I won't put up with repeated rises without challenging them though, so will see what next Spring's quote looks like.

2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
    2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!

I would look who the underwriters of the insurance company are. I’ve had insurance with a company I haven’t heard of but the underwriters were well known.
I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping) -.literally have been run over by a bike, mobility scooter and a car - still here 💪

It's also worth googling the company and seeing what reviews are like.

  • I look for the Defaqto rating and try to check exclusions.  And as SA says, sometimes the name on screen is actually delivered by a well known company anyway.

  • If you can get the deal you want online, check to see if the cashback sites are listing the provider for a few quid back!
  • I was going to mention the Defaqto thing as well. I did a trial run comparison quote on mine a few weeks ago as thanks to the idiot in the van I now have a claim on it as well - I was pleasantly surprised at a fairly small increase, but we'll see how it's looking by the time the renewal rolls round in the summer!
