Smart Meters. What's the point.

  • I thought smart meters are, well, smart and can't be physically tampered with. I remember in my young days many moons ago people would be up in court for sticking bits of photographic film to stop the meter dial turning. Somehow I thought that smart meters would be beyond being capable of physical tampering, the sort of tampering which would only be seen on physical inspection. (I'm not looking for advice on interfering with smart meters!)

Its probably best to call a halt to this now that my experience is not that unusual and in the customers long term interest.
At least they can keep an eye on the Gas Meter battery status. Eventually they will need to visit to change the 3g module on the Electric Meter once the network is switched off.

    Thanks for all the input.

As others have said, any meters still need to be physically seen.
As an example gas and electric smart meters both outside boxes but behind a locked gate.
Homeowner may have gone and read his meters monthly but now with smart meters he doesn't go anywhere near them.
I turn up and he queries why if he has smart meters but eventually goes and opens the gate for me.
I get within 6ft of the meters and say that is why we still need to 'read' meters, can you not smell gas?
    Escape reported and repaired.
Without me turning up and if he went nowhere near the meters who knows what may have happened.
