Email to say I’ve won then retracted

Options
I got an email from sainsburys Nectar saying I’d won £200 gift card. I was over the moon about this and didn’t think it was fake or a mistake as it was addressed to me personally and had my nectar balance details etc. there was a link to click to claim the gift card but it didn’t work, so I contacted them. After getting nowhere as they had closed for the night I then got an email saying that this was a mistake. Surely if I’ve been told I won something along with personal info on the email they should honour this?

  • That's such a shame - I hope you have a big win coming your way soon.

You could complain, and argue they should honour it, but I don't think you could argue that they must honour it.

No idea why you would think because the e-mail includes personal details that stops it from being a mistake - as you were not able to "claim" that should have gone some way to prepare you for possible disappointment  - this is not the first time "winner" emails have been sent by mistake and I am sure it will not be the last - I count something as a win only when I have received the prize not before.

From many years ago Boots was the one I remember and they paid £10 each to the non-winners

"Boots has attracted criticism from consumers and industry figures after it mistakenly told 9,000 entrants to a Facebook competition they had won the prize.
The Bezier run Facebook competition in partnership with VO5 offered a trip for two to Barcelona including a haircut provided by the haircare brand.
The slip up is thought to have cost Boots around £90,000 as it is offering every person that entered £10 worth of advantage card points as an apology. The retailer is also re-entering the contestants in another competition to win the trip to Barcelona."

I feel your pain as I had the same email. I tried emailing them to tell them how disgusted I was but it just bounced back. Not great when you've told family that you've won.
