When to hand in my notice at work?

Is there no written note of how the commission works? How do you know what is due to you if nothing is in writing?0

That's what I was wondering. I guess it was agreed before hand via a verbal job offer but I do not have anything.General_Grant said:Is there no written note of how the commission works? How do you know what is due to you if nothing is in writing?0 -
You have to tell them sooner rather than later. What happens if a reference request lands sooner? If you are in sales, that is very likely. I'm sorry I do fear for you - I accepted a job earlier this year on a Friday afternoon, 9am on Monday they asked my (soon to be ex) employer for a reference. My shift wasn't until much later that day and I was greeted with my boss at the time, saying congrats I hear you have a new job! All I could do was apologise, explain I was joining a compliant industry who would take refs and that I wouldn't be forced to give notice until all checks were complete. Fortunately, I turned 1 weeks notice really into nearly three weeks with agreement in end, as I remained firm on that Monday that having a reference request through wasn't actually my resignation there and then. (I was a bit disgusted at the new firm thinking someone must literally put down the call to say you are successful and run straight to boss to say I'm leaving but that's by the by)sophiaonthego94 said:
So if I give my notice on the 22/12 my last day of employment would then be 29/12 right? I just don't want it to be very awkward and make it look like I waited to tell them last minute... could they not just say ok that is it then we won't pay you for another week as you don't have any holiday left?
By telling them sooner, you also get any problems sorted rather then it rolling into a new job and spare any ill feeling that you are leaving them in it with recruitment.
I hope they will be generous over Christmas I really do. If nothing else they may learn not to give it as a bonus going forward.0 -
Not the best advice to someone who clearly has been with their company some time and wishes to remain in the same industry.stu12345_2 said:don't bother with giving them full notice and let them keep your week in arrears wages and put it down to bad luck and experience and enjoy your new job1 -
Thanks for your comment. So Thankfully I know this won’t happen because my recruiter has spoken to them and told them to not call for a reference for several reasons this month and they have agreed.Unwell2023 said:

If nothing else they may learn not to give it as a bonus going forward.I haven’t been treated nicely at this job most of the time so I honestly do not believe I own them anything and I have to think about myself first here and not them. I’m not going to risk loosing out on 500/600 Pounds and giving my notice way too early. If I give it at around the 21/22nd for example this will still give them almost two weeks and a new person has been hired already to start this Friday (same role as me) so it’s not going to be them on their own anyways. I think I’m just letting their manipulative behavior scare me which made me go into panic mode about it all. It probably is best to tell them before the holidays but how do I tell them? Do I have to say I found a new job?0 -
you don't have to tell them you have a new job. you just write i hereby give you notice from today's date( state today's date)as I wish to resign from my current position of inset job title.my last day of employment will be on. insert date
please ensure any unpaid wages and holiday pay is calculated and paid into my bank.
thank you

So you would not do it in person and just on email / letter then?stu12345_2 said:you don't have to tell them you have a new job. you just write i hereby give you notice from today's date( state today's date)as I wish to resign from my current position of inset job title.my last day of employment will be on. insert date

email or letter should be ok. but how would you know they opened it and read it. and what about the time delay if you posted it. they could say we only got it 5 days after you sent it, and the date of resignation is now useless to us as we got no time to prepare.
I always do it in person. and always to the right department or person, never the reception desk or a workmate
but the resignation must always be in writing, never a verbal chat.
and they must write back to you showing they are dealing with it.
and the clock starts ticking the day after you gave it. you must not count the day you handed it to them as part of the notice period.
notice period starts with the first full clear dayChristians Against Poverty solved my debt problem, when all other debt charities failed. Give them a call !! ( You don't have to be a Christian ! )
