Costs for more NHS treatment after filling

I recently had some fillings replaced as my dentist advised they were beginning to fail. One was an NHS band 2 and the others white at an extra cost.

I called the dentist a few weeks after to say I'm getting toothaches and sensitivity in different places which was keeping me up at night and was given an appointment that day.

After X-rays and examination they think one of the teeth which had its filling replaced is causing all the pain and needs a root canal. Something was done to numb the pain which has worked so far and another appointment due to extract the tooth - I chose this option as it won't be seen.

Is right that I had to pay £25.80 for that appointment/treatment?

And what about the extraction and any possible further treatment if its not that one tooth. Should I have to pay for that too?

  • £25.80 was probably the charge for an emergency appointment which is not covered by the two month rule.

If within two months of NHS treatment you are seen by the same dentist in the same practice and need further treatment in the same band (extractions are band 2 the same as fillings) then you will not have to pay a further charge for treatment other than emergency treatment.
