Paying provident after death

Options
My father had a payment plan with Lowell for a provident loan of £2200  he passed away 10 weeks away and I have had several letters of Phillips cohen associates asking for full payment.

does anyone know if I have to pay the loan as he’s deceased and provident is no longer in business.

    You don't have to, no.

But the loan needs to be settled from your father's estate, assuming it's solvent.  The executor will be held responsible if it's not paid.

I am sorry about your loss and also that you are having to deal with this. The only source of money to pay for this would be your father's estate - after the funeral was paid for, did he actually leave anything?  If he left nothing  then that is what Lowell need to be told - ie that there are no assets and no-one is administering the estate.
If however there is some money then it gets more complicated and you need to look at what he left and what debts there are

Phillips Cohen are specialists in handling debts owed by deceased creditors and you should find that they are professional and decent to deal with as long as you don’t ignore them.

If you father’s estate is insolvent and what there is will be totally used up by funeral costs then it is fairly simple, you write to P&C explaining that the estate is insolvent and that after funeral costs there will be nothing to distribute then that should be the ent of the matter.

If there is something left after funeral costs but not enough to cover the debt then it is somewhat more tricky. If you are certain that this is the only debt then what is left should be used to go towards the debt and the rest of the dept will be written off. If however there could be other debts you might not be aware of apart from arranging for funeral costs you should not attempt to administer the estate.

Did your father own his home and if he did what was his marital status?

Thanks he was widowed and we do not believe he has anymore debts, we have already had to pay 2220 on the funeral and that’s with a plan., he owed 700 to funeral directors from my mums funeral 17 years ago and they wouldn’t do his until paid, then extra 700 for plot and 800 for wake and flowers.

@Keep_pedalling has covered the process in some depth, basically if the value of his estate will not cover the debt, its just Provident`s bad luck.
