Hubby had shingles a few years ago, his GP would not prescribe anything, it was brutal - so I am glad apple is getting meds. The thing he found was when the pain hit he could not move 20 - 30 seconds. Safe to say I had to do all the driving - I couldn't even let him drive to the surgery for fear of him 'freezing' at the wheel. It was about 4 weeks after the rash had gone before he could drop be safely. So while I can't advise on the pain, if you are suffering pain and need to go somewhere get someone to drive you.
Probably because he presented outside of the initial 48hr window. Prompt treatment is crucial but the associated pain (although undeniably nasty) can usually be managed by meds that can be purchased over the counter. In my case, the pain felt akin to a needle suturing my skin tight, that was bad enough but your DH's experience sounds awful!
He didn't though ... He went to bed fine, first noticed a small rash in the shower - That hurt when it got wet. He showed me said rash I couldnt process it at first (it looked familier but I had worked 13 hour shifts for the last 4 days not really thinking straight) 1/2 hour later realised it was shingles told him and by that stage it had spread and started weeping, it was so quick. He got an online appointment with a Dr and we took photos to email to the surgery. It was late 2020 we were out of lockdown but in person GP appointments were as rare as hen's teeth. He did get an appointment 2 hours later but the GP had to call another GP for a 2nd opinion as she had never seen such a bad case, he was told no meds and he would get over it in time. Maybe such a rapid onset led them to believe they were outside the window -,but they were not.
Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"
