Rebate on band change

Options
Hi

we bought a house earlier this year which had been (clearly incorrectly) in band G.

The previous owner had lived here for 40 odd years.

I managed to get it successfully changed to a band E and it says that’s effective from 1993.

Am I right in saying that the previous owner will get the difference back dated all the way to 1993? If so, I guess I should tell her.

The previous owner will be due a refund of any CT overpayment, but some councils no longer have records of CT payments as far back as 1993, so there is a possibility she may not get a refund back to that date
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Thanks. That could be quite a large sum! Do they notify her automatically or should I let her know?

Let her know, the council may not have contact details for her

I’ll let her know. She did totally stitch us up with some major issues that she managed to cover up when we had the survey, but I guess it’s best to do the right thing

Turns out all of my neighbours have been given an automatic band decrease and a rebate back to 1993. Think my popularity may have rocketed!

And your council will probably be bankrupt! LOL

I hope this wasn't the reason that Nottingham has declared itself effectively bankrupt
