Years ago,I used to be a lab technician for 3 years ago testing building materials to British standards.
it was great working with academics, using my brain, mathematics, calculations and formulas.
Then I left that and became a bus driver,( cos the wages used to be very good years ago) what shock to the system, going into the roughest areas of Glasgow at midnight and even during the day picking up some of the roughest of the roughest. the pensioners were.nice though.
I take my hat off to bus drivers,it is one of the most stressful jobs out there.I downloaded a medical report on google that showed bus drivers( big city drivers) had elevated heart rates throughout their entire shifts
wow.its true,I can vouch for that.
it has to do with the fact the job has opposing tasks.
1. drive safely.
2.keep to timetables
the driver can't do both,as they have no real control over it and it causes big stress.
I admit in my current job at present,I can work faster if I want to keep up if I'm behind.but drivers can't break the law or go any faster than the car in front of them
something I used to explain to passengers,I'm not a train I said.Christians Against Poverty solved my debt problem, when all other debt charities failed. Give them a call !! ( You don't have to be a Christian ! )

I can't comment from a personal POV as I would be in the 40-49 age bracket but I've done a physically demanding job all my life so far and due to the high turnover where I work I've also worked with a lot of people.
In my department itself I've worked with people in their 50s & 60s just fine.
In other departments (think delivery driving with manual unloading of materials ranging from featherweight to quite heavy) we currently have a guy in his early 60s doing the job & have often had guys in their 50s.
Don't get me wrong, most people would probably fall in to the 20-49 category but I've worked with people older than that. Some have been better than the youngsters whereas others not so much.
As for how they felt when they got home and how their sleep was, obviously I couldn't tell you.0 -
I think from onwards I won't apply for outdoor jobs and or jobs that are too strenuous. which then leaves the choice of looking for a job with good work hours days and not mega stressful.
I always ask employers what is the staff turnover rate and I check out . reviews from employees on indeed website..
you should check out the reviews of firstbus on indeed site.they are shocking.but it's true as an ex employee myself.
but then look at reviews of first great western railway,it is much better.im at stage 3 in my application for a job with them.but I read the ratio is around 100 applicants per job vacancy with them.Christians Against Poverty solved my debt problem, when all other debt charities failed. Obviously everyone is different. I think it is fairly normal that you do tire more easily and need more time to recover, as you get older, although how much this affects you will depend on each individual.
Could you look at jobs which are non-office jobs but maybe less physically demanding than your current one? For instance, I wonder whether you could look at jobs such as hospital porter where you would be moving around a lot but indoors and with access to facilities for break, or even jobs such as in a warehouse or garden centre where you might have a mix or physical work and slightly less strenuous work such as stocktaking, using a fork lift etc?
Would a delivery job such as for a large supermarkert be less strenuous that what you do at the moment? I know it would involve lifting trays of groceries but you'd be driving in between so maybe the mix of driving and delivery would be less tiring.
A final option would be to look at office jobs again but aim to review your diet and exercise once you started, so you could adapt to your less physically demanding role. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0
