Could anyone clarify whether the 25% single persons discount on council tax is means tested/affected by level of savings?
I have always thought it didn’t matter on this one with regards to savings in the bank but my Mother in law is being told go let the council know the date her savings went over £16k threshold amd shr is stressing that they may assess her sincd that date.
I still think there are two different council tax reductions one as ggr discount anx another type of reduction that is means tested that shd may be getting confused on - please help guide thanks

The single person discount is not means tested. There are also other Council Tax reductions which can be effected by savings.

They are two separate things.
The single person 25% discount is a national rule where only one liable peron lives at a property.
Council Tax Support is a means tested benefit where each council (thanks David Cameron) has its own rules. A 16k limit on savings is a usual clause so clearly the date is important as that is where the benefit stops.0
