NHS new starter - negotiating salary

AIUI, most NHS roles start you at the entry point for the salary band.
Certainly worth asking (after interview and once the role is offered) whether they can bring you in part-way up the band.1 -
It boils down to whether the Trust employing you considers your current role is a close enough match to put you onto the intermediate Pay step for Band 7 rather than the entry step1

I worked in recruitment for the NHS. Usually you would need to discuss the salary at the interview. Once they have decided to pick you (if they do) it's a bit late to discuss that later. We've had people ring up once being offered the job, only to turn around and say they would like a higher salary. If it's not a straightforward case of increasing salary, it sometimes requires online form to be filled and approval. This will delay the whole recruitment process.
When you discuss it at the interview you will need to mention that your current role is similar to this role which is why you are expecting same salary at least. It's rare to see them to turn someone down about salary increase unless that person has nothing to back up why they deserve that pay.0
