Lamb neck fillet £22 a kilo!

I am recently retired and as such have more time on my hands now. so with that in mind I decided to get the slow cooker out and make a lancashire hot pot. so off to the butcher for some neck of lamb. until I saw the price. £22 a kilo! I didnt buy it. the butcher advised me to go for a kilo of leg lamb steaks instead. which was slightly better at £19.00.
I know we've had all this cost of living rise, but I all ways remember stews and casseroles etc as being a good cheap meal. that doesnt appear to be the case in this instance!

I long ago gave up buying lamb as too expensive - it's always chicken for casseroles for us now.
  • The best thing would be a jokey reply here...because that is the best medicine!
Totally getting this feeling weekly now! Really experiencing that economic divide  now, not just reading it in the news. Even Lamb's liver is pricey!!

So... you didn't ask for it but since I am a natural busy body I'm giving it. Don't read on if you are bored by advice!
Mutton- the slow cooker is ideal for tougher cuts.
Reduce the amount of meat- add your favourite legume. It's healthier and cheaper. After a while I began to really look forward to those beans and lentils; it seems like an incomplete meal without them.
I mix lentils in my tuna salad now too.
Catcha wave and you're sittin on topofa world

    I second mutton. Lovely flavour.
My grandmother always used to use 'scrag end' of lamb which is part of the neck. Delicious but you have to order it from the butcher now. Still cheap I think as it includes bones which a lot of people aren't used to but the flavour from cooking on the bone is noticable and it has good stuff for your health in it. Now extracted and sold for your health in tablet form........go figure!

As for the price of lamb, they are producing lambs for this Christmas (sorry if it upsets anyone) and we now have lambs bread for autumn. Not sure how I feel about that. Posted a picture on the Gardening forum because it was a surprise and lots of walkers were stopping to look.

As a student we used to eat Mackeral. That's not cheap now. And Sea Bream my fishmonger (remember those) recommended as good and cheap. It's now a 'delicacy' and pricey.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • Lamb neck fillet has always been expensive compared to other cuts of lamb.

Morries shin of beef recently jumped from £8 to £11 per kilo, quite a jump, wondering if there is increased demand for the yuppiefied dishes that are appearing in Christmas offerings.
I will be waiting till after the festive season before I buy again
Do not know where they get the 4.6% inflation figure from but it is not my shopping basket.

Iceland has a frozen half leg of NZ lamb for £10. Frozen whole legs of  NZlamb are £20.

Frozen 400g bags of lamb chump chops are £4 but there's an offer on atm, 3 bags for £10. Fresh 300g lamb chump chops are 4.15 or 2 for £7 or 4 for £13. Frozen diced casserole lamb is £5 for a 350g bag but you can get three bags for £10.

I have had frozen lamb from Sainsbury's and found small sharp bones.

That could be quite dangerous if using for a stew or casserole.

The small print did say food inflation remained over 30% :o , conveniently omitted from headlines

I don't know if you got that from my post in another place ... https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/80403337/#Comment_80403337
... (which I have corrected) ... 30% is since October 2021, whereas current annual food inflation is 10.1% ... according to the ONS.

However I do agree with the general sentiment. BTW Vigorous debate still going on in that other place.
