i have gone into my 2021-22 return, i have gone into "Personal pensions and retirement annuities"
I have filled in box 1 by taking the total of my contributions for that year, dividing by 80 and multiplying by 100 as described in the help part.
i have gone to submit this and it tells me i owe them £1k, due by 31/1/2023?0 -

What was the original liability for 2021-22?
A reasonably precise amount would be useful.0 -
i think i worked it out. the original liability for that tax year was £1800 and now it shows £1200 so i am assuming i will get a refund or tax code change to give me back the £600. i have entered 2022-23 and it shows i have overpaid by £1k+ so again im hoping for a refund or tax code change.
they said going forward, as i am not filling a Self assessment in any more, i have to ring them every year before my P60 is issued to claim this relief. does this sound correct?
i will write to them again ref 2020-21 as i cant re-open this assessment0 -

How was the £1,800 collected? The two usual options are you paid it direct to HMRC or it is being collected a deduction to your 2023-24 tax code. If the later you need to make sure your code is updated before March payday at the latest and then your employer will include any overpaid tax in your payslip.
For 2022-23 it again depends on what has happened so far. If this is the first return i.e. not am amendment, then it cannot impact your tax code in anyway, the £1k+ would be refunded to you by HMRC.
The last bit doesn't sound correct no, you don't need to do anything before your P60 is issued, you have 4 years to claim. But there is no point on leaving it till the last minute.0
