Daughter's car insurance

Quick question - I'm letting my 31 year old daughter use my second car on a pretty much permanent basis. She doesn't live with me. I am still the owner and registered keeper of the car, but I'd like to insure it for her. If I insure it myself, with her as a named driver, and main driver, I get a quote of c.£250. If she tries to insure it herself, the quote is nearly £1,000. She lives in Glasgow, and has no no-claims bonus, but this is obviously a heckuva difference. Any thoughts on what I should do? I want to do the right thing, but don't want to throw money away for no reason.

Could the difference be down to the address you use? If you are somewhere safe and the insurer considers Glasgow isn't there's bound to be a difference.
The main thing is that if she is the person normally driving the car - particularly at some distance to you - then she needs to be named as the main driver not simply named on the policy. If you are noted as the main driver it could be invalidate the policy completely.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Is that with the car registered at your address?mcintoshman2004 said:Quick question - I'm letting my 31 year old daughter use my second car on a pretty much permanent basis. She doesn't live with me. As it needs to be at her address, which will no doubt increase the cost more in line with her own quote.Life in the slow lane1 -
Where are you declaring the vehicle being when you do your quote? Are you remembering you cannot use your NCD from the first car on this second car?1

Thanks all. Hmm, a quite a lot to think about there. She is named as the main driver, not just a named driver, for the £250 quote. On Martin's Compare Quotes tool there is no opportunity to state where the car will be kept (other than 'in a driveway'. Yes, I'm sure the fact she is in Glasgow and I am in the countryside increases the cost, but that much? The car is registered at my address, as I am the registered keeper, but it is mainly in Glasgow at her address. I didn't realise I couldn't use my NCD from my first car - it was largely earned on my second car! I think I'll click on the cheapest quote and see whether they ask these questions when I attempt to actually deal with the company themselves.0

Have a search for FRONTING.
The one and only MSE himself mentioned the illegality of it on his show recently.
Best bet is to contribute to the insurance with her as the main driver and her declaring she is not the owner or registered keeper.1 -
Yes, you should quote using her address as the risk address not yours... when you click through you may be able to give a correspondence address if you want things physically posted to you. Big city -v- small rural area can add a 0 to the price.mcintoshman2004 said:Thanks all. Hmm, a quite a lot to think about there. We did this. Youngest child used my car during lockdown as I didn’t need it. We rang the insurance company and explained exactly what we wanted. He was the main driver and it was listed as being at his house. You have to be careful that you don’t misinform the insurance company or they might decline or cancel your insurance. Or not pay out if she claims.1
