we applied for council tax band to be reduced from C to B through govt website in September. we got reply saying we were succsessful and would be rebanded to B. Had a letter from council today confirming this and altering our payments going forward but nothing saying about compensation for overpayment for past 30 years. My question is will this come later or do you have to apply for this any advice is welcome.

It is usual for councils to automatically refund any overpayment in a lump sum cheque having deducted any CT owing for the current financial year. The council saying they are adjusting your payments going forward suggests they may have overlooked the overpayment. I would contact them and ask when you will receive your refund for overpayment. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1
