Flora Buttery big change to ingredients

Just compared a tub of Flora Buttery in the supermarket with one I already have in the fridge. It's been completely re-formulated (and they make a big thing about this in their publicity!) so now it doesn't contain palm oil. It also now has no buttermilk, but instead has coconut fat and "faba bean preparation" whatever that is. Vegan dairy substitute?
So I won't be bothering to buy it again. I really liked the taste of it plus it didn't contain anything I wouldn't have in my kitchen, but it's going to be spreadable butter from now on (and carefully reading the pack every time I shop).

  • It is still completely ultra-processed though.

I have gone back to butter now, but use a lot less of it. I keep a small amount at room temperature in the hope that it spreads when I need it. In practice that means I use it on toast.

So much to read, so little time.

Trawling through the new threads and found this amongst the great stack of mortgage and loan threads- reading ingredients- favourite pasttime!

  • I have used Flora Buttery for a long time, mainly because it was a good consistency, the taste was acceptable. I backed all of the complaints in 2020 when Flora removed the buttermilk and was pleased they reverted to their old recipe. When I bought my last tub,I knew there was something different as soon as I put the knife into the spread as it is more difficult to spread. The taste has also changed. I contacted Flora and they said it was in response to customers wanting fully plant based products. Maybe a lot of people do but I think it’s short sighted of them to remove the buttermilk for those who preferred it. I’m now looking for an alternative. Please can anyone suggest an alternative which spreads easily and tastes more like butter? Thanks

Clover, Anchor, Bertolli, Lurpak, Country Life, President, Utterly Butterly, Yeo Valley, own brand knock-offs of the above... The list of spreadable 'butter' things that either contain buttermilk or are a blend of butter and oils (might taste more buttery to you?) is absolutely massive.

Basically avoid Flora, Pure, I can't believe it's not butter, and Vitalite. Pretty much everything else contains buttermilk or butter in various quantities.
  • Thank you, looks like I’ll have to try a few!

My father was diagnosed with high cholesterol and my mother switched all of us to a very low fat diet, while keeping a butter dish for herself in a kitchen cupboard. I hated Flora etc and reverted to butter when I moved in with other half.

Serious question.. If Flora Buttery contains no butter or buttermilk, how can the manufacturer call it Flora Buttery.

What I really want to know is how has peanut butter been getting away with it for so long?

Absolute sham, it's a vegan product, no butter in it at all! My entire life it's been called that, and many years before that - if we're renaming all the vegan foods to have non dairy names I say we start there. I've seen uproar over oat milk and calls for vegan sausages to be renamed, but peanut butter has been hiding under the radar, sneakily being vegan in people's cupboards this whole time.

Or horseradish, as I genuinely thought it was blended horses and radishes when I was about 5.
  • Maybe because peanut butter is an American thing @Mnoee ? Logically, tahini should then be sesame butter.

ASDA Organic crunchy peanut butter 340g 1.99 made from peanuts and salt, doesn't have a really pronounced peanut flavour. It's really really runny, but put it in the fridge and it goes rock hard. Bit if a Fail, all round.
