I will reach SP age on 12/02/2024 last week i received a letter by post from the DWP with a invitation code to claim my SP

My question is when would be the latest that i could claim my SP if i want to receive it from 12/02/2024 ? Would  early January next year be OK  . Also would it be OK to have it payed in to my Metro Bank account considering the problems they have had in the last few weeks

I believe you can defer it for 11 months and get it all backdated at the current rate (little benefit to this tbf), or defer it for an unspecified period and get 1% extra per week for each 9 weeks you defer by.

As for Metro bank, deposits up to £85k are protected anyway and the State Pension isnt anywhere near that amount.

having it backdated can be a right nightmare particularly if you are on income based benefits.  getting a backdated lump sum would require a lot of benefits to be paid back.

  • What's the problem with sending your SP code NOW to be sure you are keeping to DWP's time frame ? There is no point in wanting to defer the invitation you have just received. And, yes, payment into Metro is fine.
  • And on another note on my SP forecast there are years when i did not have the full year of NI contributions and it is to late now to pay the shortfall now  . But there are six years starting from 1995  when i did not pay any NI contributions only tax because i was working part time for a sub contractor in  construction  those years are blank on my SP forecast

My question is are those blank years on my SP forecast going to affect my SP in any way ?

What exactly does your state pension forecast show?

How many qualifying years did you have at 6/4/16?

Your SP forecast should state the amount of pension you have accrued.  Even if it is below the full SP you can only fill in the blanks for the previous 6 years.  Also NI payments in the tax year in which you reach SP age dont count so I am afraid that what the forecast says is what you will get, assuming that it does include the 2022/2023 tax year.

My SP forecast shows the full years of NI contributions and the years that are not full and the years that i did not pay any NI contributions

I had 20 full years NI contributions on 6/4/16 and six or seven years since then
  • In general, Is the amount you're going to get, not indicated on the letter to claim? Or do they not reveal that until you've claimed??
