Greengrocers might have better sizes if you have one local enough to use,    I was in one today when out running errands and they had several varieties at a very good size at about 2.40 per kilo.   Only variety that was smallish was the russetts but don't see them often in the supermarket and they were still a decent size for that variety.

My local grocer sells good quality produce at eye-watering prices, and there are both a Costcutter and Tesco Express virtually next door which are consistently less expensive (although not cheap either). However if I venture towards the high street, there are no less than 3 units that sell bowls of decent fruit and veg at a much more affordable price.

Lidl and Aldi are the sensible compromise.

The quality and sizing does always tend to be better in the greengrocers. I have just found that the produce is significantly more expensive than in supermarkets - for obvious reasons though

I live in Kent, home of the apple. Apples are often picked all at once and put into cold storage where they can remain for a year. Not just growers for supermarkets which do that. Riverford picks their entire organic apple crop and stores them.

People eat apples more frequently than they cook with them now. So fun size for packed lunches.

Whereas in Canada, people make apple sauce, to go on ice cream, Brits have tended to make pies and crumbles and we just don't do that as much now.  Also, it's much harder to find cooking apples, too.
