National Insurance contribution black hole - anyone originally from Jersey?

HI forumites.
I wonder if anyone has been in this situation?
I am originally from Jersey and moved to UK to work back in 1994.
I came with my number (same digits as UK NI) and that was what I was told I could use on my first day. I had the same number till 2002 when the DWP thought I didn't exist and I ended up with a new number. After seeing Martin Lewis advice to check NI I discovered all I had paid in from 1994 to 2001 was missing. I have contacted HMRC and have got some back where I had paperwork but I am still missing some and have had to write again (took almost a year from them to reply!). Anyone any ideas or has anyone had a similar situation?? Thanks

When did you receive your Jersey NI/SS number (or when were you born)?
If it was issued before Apr 1975 (ie you were born prior to 1960) then you can use it in the UK however if it was issued after this date it wasn't useable in the UK https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a75ab4340f0b67f59fceafb/nino-staff-guide-channel-island.pdf
