Might just keep that bit to myself.

He said they had to put in an extra couple of injections today as although the gum was numb he could still feel it when they touched the tooth. It did work in the end though.

    I wouldn't worry too much.

Once the nerve is out (Which they have done already) there is nothing there to feel with.

Although he will still be numbed up for the rest of the treatments, most of it could probably be done with no anaesthetic at all in perfect comfort.

(Remember all that stuff about Gordon Brown having a root filling with no anaesthetic earlier in the year? It really was nowhere near as heroic as it was painted!!)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Must have missed the Gordon Brown story - don't remember anything about it.

We have an appointment today at 11.10am so we'll see what our dentist says.

    Just a little update.

Our dentist has managed to re-attach his piece of tooth on a temporary basis - unfortunately not enough of the tooth left to be a permanent solution. She has taken an x-ray and the root itself is fine. She had hoped that the dental hospital had done the root filling when they removed the nerve but apparently not. He also needs another tooth fixed as it has a small chip in it which we didn't notice until this morning. It doesn't seem to have harmed the nerve though but she'll keep an eye on it.

He will need the root treatment plus a crown (with post) and this will be done over the next few weeks. Unfortunately an awkward time of year with places being closed. At least it looks better with the shorn off piece back in place - you would never notice it had been broken. He'll just have to be careful not to bite into things at the moment.

Fortunately it will get done on the NHS but will still cost Around £182.

My son has sensibly decided to get a gum shield fitted once this work is completed. Now all I have to do is persuade my younger son to do the same but he's proving difficult. Perhaps showing him the bill will help!
  • Glad its getting sorted!
I would definitley push the gums shields! Post crowns can sometimes cause the root around them to fracture in which case its an implant.
Where I work the kids at school aren't allowed to do sports unless they have an adequate, well fitting and well made gum shield.

    Happy xmas!

Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you are usually right.

Dentist said the same and my elder son definitely intends to get one just as soon as the work is done. Younger son point blankly refuses - I'll need to get his girlfriend to work on him. ;)

Hopefully it won't come to that.

I remember when the boys were at school they were offered gum shields. Certainly seems like a good idea.
    Happy xmas!

    And to you.
  • I broke my two front teeth in the late 60's. They were apparently dealt with adequately with crowns and so forth. However for years, on and off, I suffered with severe pain (at this age I was going to the dentist every 4 months but he still managed to miss the fact that I had abcesses coming and going).
It wasn't until 1981 I went to have my crowns replaced that my dentist (I'd changed by then) noticed a problem with the gum above one of the crowns.
Root canal treatment was begun on that tooth and the adjoining one and new crowns put in place. Four years later I needed an apicectomy, a direct result from the earlier blow to my teeth as bacteria infection had got in through the root and I was in danger of losing my front teeth as the jaw bone was damaged.)
Fourteen years later the other front tooth started to cause me a very great deal of pain, more root canal treatment followed courses of antibiotics.
So you see, it's my experience that if your younger son can avoid the same fate by wearing a gumshield then he should. The treatment (and pain) can go on for years if you break your teeth.

I agree. Unfortunately he's not listening and at 21 there's not much I can do to insist on it.

I'll just have to leave it just now as the more I go on about it the more he digs his heels in. Hopefully he will see sense or perhaps his brother/girlfriend will get through sometime.
  • I take your point, I wasn't good at taking advice at 21 either.

Have a good Christmas hope your older son soon gets his tooth sorted out - at least dental treatment has come a long way....:T
