You would hope that the employer would have insurance in place to cover lost revenue due to situations like this, and would thus be able to pay their employees normally. I don't see why the employees should suffer (morally or legally) rather than the business.

I agree it wouldn't be a good idea to sue them for the day's wages. But maybe a union, if you are in one, would be of help.
But the business should suffer financially for doing the right thing for its employees due to a weather event out of their control?

I was just thinking of this thread as where my wife works has sent a text to say they are closing tomorrow because of the storm coming in (Ciaran).  We are not really even in the forecast worst of it.

I have to say it all seems reasonable and there'd probably be very few customers if the bad weather does come in any way, so this is the safest thing to do for the customers and the staff.  Keeps everyone safe, which has to be the priority.

My wife only started there in June and this is the second time they have shut in advance because of forecast inclement weather.  It is unusual compared to other work places, but actually quite refreshing that they put something ahead of just squeezing the last drop out of everyone.

We were told not to come in today but will have to make the hours up another day - seems reasonable to me.
