Alliance and Leicester mortgage - now Santander

i have a question relating to extending my 25yr interest only mortgage by 2 years. I’ve been in touch with Santander and all seemed well, but my question is, why do I need to remortgage to Santander when Santander fully own Alliance and Leicester mortgages.
