I've had a Monzo account for at least a couple of years. Recently the app asked me to make a 15 second video for identification purposes. When the account was opened i supplied a proof of identity and proof of address.

So i thought i would close the account because they kept threatening to limit the service if i didn't make the video. I had a zero balance anyway.

You are supposed to be able to close the account via the app.
So i tried. I entered the PIN and got a little further, entered the PIN again as instructed and was told the PIN was incorrect!

It turns out, i would have to make the video just to close the account. Thus giving the information i did not want to give in the first place :)

My Revolut account has not asked for any additional security information. Nor has my MetroBank account.

I was wondering if any other online only banks had asked for this?

Are they any such demands on Starling, Chase and Kroo accounts?

Most 'fintech' offerings need you to do this I've found. First Direct have also added it to their App-based applications.

Natwest Group have a proprietary camera based thing but it's just an option, you can stick to cards and card readers if you prefer.

All the other high street banks I'm aware of don't need it. Possibly Metro is different, I've never had an account with them.

Starling needed me to record a short video for verification when I installed the app on a new phone, but I haven't needed to since. I've never had to with Chase but I've not used them for a while now.

Recording a video of yourself is a step to far for me. I recently missed out on a TSB switch offer as a video was required. On one hand we are constantly warned of fraud then we are expecting to give all this information to be checked by god knows who. Doesn't sit right with me.

I have the FD app and have not been asked for any video. Maybe I will have that joy to come in future.

I was put off monzo or starling by asking me for a video.
I am thinking of going to santander as they have branches.

To clarify, at the moment they only ask for a video during the application stage 'KYC' checks, and then only via the app, I believe.

So making sure that a fraudster who has obtained your login details somehow is unable to set up your bank account on a phone app, by giving a video record of yourself that is checked manually when you set up your app on a new phone (as Starling and probably Monzo require), is a step too far for you...
    Evolution, not revolution

Almost ALL of the high street banks that still have bricks and mortars banks where you open an account via online rather than apps do not require you to do a selfie.

The video malarkey is just a modern variation on turning up at a branch with photo ID - they look at the photo ID, they look at you and if the two match, then they know the photo id presented matches the the person in branch/on the video, click the button on the form, job done.

This method of verification was used for "Right to work" checks during the pandemic - the previous checks required a face to face check of person against document in the checker's hand, and the checker took a copy of the doc for their records. This got replaced by a scan/photocopy/picture of the document in the checker's hand, and a zoom/teams/whatever video call to check the likeness.
