Going self employed??

How do you find out whatever it is you need to find out for you to go self employed?
Specifically as a driver, in case it makes a difference.
Again if it makes a difference then as a HGV driver (I'm not asking if you need to get a HGV licence or need to do your CPC etc - that's all taken care of).

I've no idea what paperwork you need. There'll be nobody sorting your tax out so you'd need to do something there. I suspect there may be some kind of insurance or insurances required.

But as for what you need exactly & what you need to do, I'd have no idea where you'd even begin or who you'd even turn to to say what do I need to do.

That is a very broad question.
In what way do you envisage operating as a self-employed HGV driver?
Do you need to have your own HGV? (not licence, the actual cab)

Help is at hand! See https://www.gov.uk/browse/business

Also useful (regardless of whether or not you are actually 'low paid'): https://www.litrg.org.uk/tax-guides/self-employment
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

ISTR from past threads (here or possibly on another forum) that its tricky to be a self-employed trucker without your own cab as you fail most of the "are you self employed" tests

Regards the job offer, yes the wagon is supplied.

If I seem vague then it's because I'm trying to help someone find out this info as its them in this position, not me.

In the chat/interview they were told that they'd be taken on but they would have to be self-employed. As they know naff all about being self employed they're trying to find out if it's a suitable move for them or not.

The someone could try using the government employment status checker to determine whether the facts of the work would make them employed or self employed. My suspicion is that the organisation offering the work is trying to evade their employer responsibilities and should be avoided like the plague.

Thanks. I've passed all the links on.

Apparently, the offer is sounding like they'll basically work for this company but they'll have to sort their own tax, they get no paid leave & no pension contributions.

I asked if they'd found out what happens when the wagon is damaged through their own fault and also not their own fault. Same with damage to any product they may be carrying fault/non-fault and also other things (posts, wires/lines etc) that may end up damaged and also how is it decided who is at fault or not (because where I work it's decided by are you employed by us or not, if you are then you're at fault, the end).
Allegedly the company cover all this so to me it sounds like they just don't want to pay up annual leave or pension contributions.

Something isn't sounding right/good about this to me BUT they seem to have been swayed by what they've been told they could earn.
