Child train penalty

My child (14 year old) gets the train to school on Northern rail. The station she gets the train from doesn't accept cash so they have to get a promise to pay and pay at the other end. She got the train a couple of weeks ago and lost her promise to pay. She attempted to pay with cash for her ticket at the other end but the ticket inspectors took her details and refused to accept her payment. She has now received a £50 plus the price of the single fare penalty which will increase to £100 if not paid in 21 days. Does anyone have any advice for the appeal I am submitting today?

For the future, it would be worth getting your daughter a basic debit card or a preloaded card to use so she can buy a ticket.1

What are the legalities of taking a 14 year old child to court for not paying a fine, out of interest?
Note - this is not me suggesting not to pay it, just interested in the legislation and which is being used here.3 -
I would second visiting the rail forum link above, many of the regular responders work in this exact field whether from a railways perspective or a legal perspective.0

It is definitely worth appealing. But if you know that the station doesn't accept cash, why would you rely on that as a payment method? Do you believe your daughter is too young to have her own cdebit card/apple pay? I can see both sides to the argument0
