Ripped off Tesco Whoosh

Ordered a Whoosh delivery of 20 items, minus the acceptable £2.99 delivery, the bill came to £56.25. Curiosity led me to put the same items in my Tesco basket and behold only came to £39.70. An increase of £16.55. This was minus three items the store did not show from a grocery search. Have I missed some small print that declares Tesco will increase each items price if you order a whoosh??? Has anyone else had this and is it worth addressing with the store? or am I wasting my time. Thoughts please.

Just having a look they seem to use Express stores which often are more expensive that the larger stores.

Just searched Clifton moor York which is a tesco extra superstore & it does not come up when looking for woosh, only Express stores.

I have done a check on stores in an area that do Whoosh deliveries and they are all Express stores, there are several standard stores in the area, which would explain the different pricing.

Its exactly the same if you order groceries on Uber Eats or Deliveroo, the prices are higher compared to walking into the store.

You're paying for the convenience of having someone pick, pack and deliver the items - so no surprise that it's more expensive. 

How much time would it take you to go to your nearest tesco + cost of transport (driving?) + time in store + travelling back time... How much per hour do you price your time at?

thanks. I assumed it came from superstore as that is normally where it comes from but makes sense if it came from the xpress store. 

Emmia, thank you. I assume the price they charge for delivery takes into account packing. I normally shop myself but there are some situations in life that occur unexpectedly or health issues that mean for some the options of popping to the supermarket is not a viable one. Home delivery makes shopping accessible for all. Therefore unkind to hike prices when people need services that others are lucky not to need.

You're not using a normal home delivery service though (as Tesco, Ocado etc., also offer), Whoosh is a specific quick delivery service, intended for forgotten items, last minute changes of plans etc, competing with Uber Eats, Gorrillas, etc.)... £2.99 would really only cover delivery i.e. the cost of the van and the driver, not picking (someone walking round the shop, instead of you) which is factored into the higher prices. 

I'd expect that a normal online shop with Tesco, with a booked delivery to be cheaper than Whoosh.

The UK minimum wage is £10.42, so a £2.99 delivery charge represents less than 20 mins work (without factoring in the cost of fuel, the van etc.) and the £15-£16 difference in price equates to about 90mins of someone's time for picking /higher express store costs which will relate to rent etc.

I'm sorry that you're potentially forced to use these services due to health though.

*I saw an advert for Whoosh yesterday, In small print at the bottom it stated that Whoosh pricing was specific to the Whoosh service.

You are not being ripped off. 

Tesco prices differ with areas and express stores are always more. Companies like Whoosh also charge higher. You are paying for the privilege of getting groceries quick. 

If you use Tesco themselves for deliveries, you will see it’s cheaper.
