Yes I have done the council tax, water is 18 a month on a meter too, not sure if that is about average
If you are claiming benefits the water company may have a special discount for people on benefits or low income.

I don't know who is your water provider but I'm with Anglian Water and I pay £5 per month. If they don't advertise one, you could call and ask.

I defaulted with vanquis last year, they did bomb me with calls and are very sneaky, once they learn you've blocked or ignoring them, they will call off other numbers (i will PM you the full list, there are alot!!!) once they gave up, they passed it onto moorcroft (who don't own it, just on their behalf....)
  • NBE 97 I hope you have realized you must work out what is important you have to spend on and what can be put to one side at the moment.

You need to concentrate on your mortgage, council tax, utilities and food.

Do not try and pay your unsecured debts if you cannot afford to.

PIP will help but be prepared it won't be sorted for some months if you are refused at first.

You are in charge despite what the creditors want you to believe, keep coming back here if you need any help at any time.

Have you read the Old Style board, many ideas for living on a small budget?

Have you cancelled any direct debits you have in place for the credit cards? Your money will be needed elsewhere.

They cannot force you to pay, and you need to keep paying your priority bills before you pay any credit company.

Have you spoken to your mortgage company & council tax team? Also, contact your water company & ask to go onto their hardship scheme.

  • Do not worry about Vanquis, they will bluster and even threaten but in the end they won't do anything. It  would cost them more than you owe to take you to court.

Don't speak to them on the phone they will only try and threaten you.

Not paying your unsecured debts is not the end of the world, you must concentrate on all the vital payments and everything will sort it's self out in the end.

Thanks all, yes direct debits have been cancelled. Yesterday I received a letter in the post from Vanquis stating they have dropped my credit limit to 700 and so am now in arrears despite contacting them, they are now pressuring me to pay........so worried now.

I was never in arrears until they did this.
They are maximising their profit. Eventually the idiots will sell your account to someone like Lowell for 10p in the £. By that time your situation should have stabilised.

There is nothing to be worried about, what do you envisage them doing exactly?

People get these wild ideas that missing a couple of credit card payments is the end of the world, well I can assure you 100%, it is not, nothing will happen, worst case scenario, they will sell the debt as fatbelly describes above, and Lowell or whoever it may be will then spend 6/9 months running through there standard collection letters with you.

Honestly, its non priority debt, the very worst that could happen would be a CCJ for £5 a month, or something like that, and believe me, that is a very long way off in the future, if ever, and only if you don`t engage with whoever buys your accounts for peanuts.

The worst thing about debt, for those new to it, is the fear of the unknown, I suggest you do some research to calm those nerves because if you don`t have the money to pay, there is virtually nothing a creditor can do about it.
